Rules and Regulations

 

1. GENERAL RULES AND INFORMATION

1.1) THIS TOURNAMENT IS GOING TO BE PLAYED UNDER MODIFIED USA HOCKEY RULES.  The modifications are contained in the PPHL Rule Book.

1.2) OFFICIAL NAME OF TOURNAMENT: “The Puzzle Cup…Lighting the Lamp for Autism" Ice Hockey Tournament for the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism

1.3) TOURNAMENT DATES: Friday, July 29th through Sunday, July 31st

1.4) ARENA ADDRESS: Tri-Town Ice Arena (311 W River Rd, Hooksett, NH 03106) &  Ice Den Arena (600 Quality Dr, Hooksett, NH 03106)

1.5) REGISTRATION: Tri-Town Ice Arena

1.7) WITHDRAWAL OF A TEAM: Should a team withdraw before the tournament, but after being accepted, it will forfeit all fees paid.

1.9) REGISTRATION OF TEAMS: Registration cut-off is July 7th unless booked out prior to this date. All teams must make final payment before first game is played. We recommend teams arrive at Tri-Town Ice Arena 30-minutes to 1 HOUR BEFORE EACH GAME and a Minimum of 1 hour before FIRST game.

1.10) CHECK-IN PROCEDURE: ALL players must check in prior to their first game on Friday at the main registration table at their venue. Drivers license or other ID must be presented to staff to be checked against the official team roster.

1.10) ENTRY FEES: Team Entry Fee $1,150 

1.11) ELIGIBLE PLAYERS: All players must be on an approved roster prior submitted to the tournament director prior to the start of the event. All players must be 18 years of age or older.  PLAYOFF ELIGIBILITY: Players must play in a minimum of 2 round robin games to to be eligible to play in the playoff rounds.  The Tournament Coordinator reserves the right to seek modifications to a roster, including declaring a player ineligible if that player is found to be in violation of tournament rules.

A Division – Designed for more experienced players, open to all players with any level of experience including Juniors, College or Professional. There is no restriction on team make up. Teams to play a round robin format with top teams playing in a final.

B Division – This is a competitive level division, with a mixed level of experience. Teams should have no more than 2-4 players with College or Jr.s experience, with no more than 1-2 players currently playing at this level. The remainder of players should have high school or recreational level experience. The division has been split by level based on roster/player experience, past years results, at the director’s discretion. Tournament format will be a round robin format by division, with the top teams based on points advancing to the playoffs.

C Division – Competitive, slower paced hockey, with a mix of experienced players.

D Division – Competitive, but slowest pace of hockey offered, with some players being unfamiliar with the game.

Recreational Division - this is a bona fide "just for fun" division. No experience required. 

Women’s Division – this is a competitive level division, with the general level of experience to be an equal mix of players that have recreational, high school and college experience. Please limit college experience players to 1-2 per team. Teams to play a round robin format with the top two teams playing in a final.

2. TOURNAMENT SPECIFIC RULES

2.1) Tag up off sides / 17 Minute Run Clock / 2:00 penalties / Hybrid Icing / Blue Line Icing.

2.2) JERSEYS: Team All teams must provide their own team jerseys with numbers. We will have a couple set of jerseys in case teams have the same colors, these can be used for that game then returned. We ask all players to bring an opposite color jersey to the tournament for back up.

2.3) LOCKER ROOMS:  Please check rink monitors for locker room assignments.  Your cooperation is necessary to ensure a smoothly running event. 

2.4) PLAYERS:  Playing on multiple teams is allowed only if you are registered for multiple teams. Players cannot join teams for playoffs.

2.5) SCHEDULE: Teams must accept their schedule. NO CHANGES WILL BE MADE TO A TEAM'S SCHEDULE. Plan on having to play between 4:00pm Friday and 4:00pm Sunday.

2.6) SCHEDULE AND STANDINGS ONLINE: All schedules and standings will be posted online at powerplayhockey.com under the tournament tab - Puzzle Cup. These will be updated live as long as there are no issues with internet, in which case they will be updated as soon as possible after the game(s).

2.7) HALLWAYS & LOCKER ROOMS

2.7.3) The Tournament Coordinator or Sponsoring Organization is not responsible for accidents or loss of goods that could occur to teams during the tournament. This is a “play at your own risk” tournament, with waiver of liabilities to be signed by each participant.

2.8)  FIGHTING, DANGEROUS BODY CHECKS OR ANY OTHER "INTENT TO INJURE" ACTIONS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED DURING THE TOURNAMENT!!! ANY SUCH ACTIVITY WILL LEAD TO PLAYER DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE REMAINDER OF THE TOURNAMENT. TOURNAMENT COORDINATOR HAS DISCRETION TO DISQUALIFY ENTIRE TEAM.

3. DURATION OF GAMES

3.1) Round Robin or Parity Games - All periods are run time, with the games consisting of 3 - 17 Minute Periods. All CHAMPIONSHIP games will be 3 – 17 Minute Periods, run time. Followed by 1 - 5 Minute 3v3 Run Time OT, then shootout (if necessary).

3.2) All penalties will be run time. All minor penalties will be 2:00 minutes in length.

3.3) A 2-3-minute WARM-UP will be given to each team before their respective game, and will start on time, regardless if team is on ice.

3.4) There will be a 30 second break between periods.

3.5) Time Outs – NO TIME OUTS IN ROUND ROBIN or PARITY PORTION OF TOURNAMENT. IN SEMI FINAL AND FINALS, EACH TEAM WILL BE GIVEN 1 – 30 SECOND TIME OUT.

4. OVERTIME RULES

4.1) In the case of a tie after 3 periods of play in round robin or parity play, there will be no overtime. In the playoffs there will be a 5 minute 3v3 than shootout.

5. TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

5.1) All teams are guaranteed a minimum of 3 games, or the equivalent of 3 hours of ice time. The top 4 teams from each division will make the playoffs. 1 v 4, 2 v 3 in the first round and winners of each for the Championship game.

5.2) The tournament coordinator, based on number of entrants, will determine the schedule for the round robin and parity portion.

5.3) Points System for Round Robin / Parity

• 2 Points for a Win, 1 Point for a Tie, and 0 points for a loss.

• Teams will be seeded by point total of all games played.

• To break a tie for seeding into the playoff, the following tie breaking criteria will be used:

o Head to Head Competition – the winner of that game will determine who moves forward. If no clear determination can be made (a tie, or three-way head to head results are “circular”), move to next criteria.

o Total Goals against in Round Robin Round (lower amount is higher seed)

o Total Goals For in Round Robin Round (Higher amount is higher seed)

o Total Goal Differential in Round Robin or Parity Round (higher amount is higher seed)

o Coin Toss

6. DISCIPLINE COMMITTEE

6.1) All discipline matters will be handled by the Department of Player Safety, who shall enlist the support and input of the PPHL leadership team.

7. TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES

7.1) It is the team’s responsibility, with the team captain ultimately responsible, to conduct itself in accordance with the rules of good sportsmanship and fair play. PLEASE REMEMBER WHY WE ARE HERE.

8. EQUIPMENT

8.1) At all times during the game, the following protective gear must be worn by all players including goalkeepers:

a) A.C.N.O.R. (C.S.A.) Approved hockey helmet. Also needs to have a chin strap securely fastened.

b) All appropriate safety equipment including shin pads, gloves, elbow pads.  Hockey pants, chest protection/shoulder pads, and protective cups are strongly recommended. 

c) Officials and tournament coordinator reserve the right to refuse a player opportunity to play if equipment is deemed not appropriate.

9. DRESSING ROOMS

9.1) Each team is responsible for the cleaning of the dressing room after its game.

10. TROPHIES

10.1) The tournament director will be presenting the championship trophy to the Tournament Champion in each division, and each winning team will have their photo taken on the ice with the trophy. 

11. "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY" PLAN

11.1) In case of a major interruption, such as a prolonged power outage, which could cause a major delay in the schedule, the tournament director reserves the right to suspend the activities. The winners for games cancelled would be determined by a draw, in order to proceed to the next round.
